It is the heart of the historic centre of Granada, a place that has been brimming with life and commercial activity since the 8th century and it welcomes thousands of tourists from all over the world every year.
With the famous Gran Vía de Colón going through it, the district has the Albaicín on the east in the Plaza Nueva and the Puerta de Elvira –the first that provided access to the Moorish kasbah, and it is separated in the south from the old Realejo Jewish quarters by the Plaza de Isabel la Católica and calle Reyes Católicos.
Next to the cathedral is the Alcaicería, which was a Moorish silk market, and today it is full of thriving handicraft and souvenir shops. On the other side, stands the Palacio de la Madraza, which was the former madrasa of Granada, the first of the city, until cardinal Cisneros shut it down and looted its library in 1499.
Just like the Monasterio de San Jerónimo, this has stood in the north part of the district since the beginning of the 16th century. Gonzalo Fernández de Córdoba lies here next to his wife, nicknamed for posterity as the Gran Capitán (Great Captain) for his heroic military feats during the Granada war that led to the end of the Nasrid dynasty.
