Seville’s Mercado del Arenal: everything you need to know
Mercado del Arenal is one of Seville’s five traditional markets and one of the city’s icons when you are visiting Seville. It first opened in 1947, when the first stalls were inaugurated in the building designed by the Sevillian architect Juan Talavera y Heredia.
Why you should visit Mercado del Arenal
Seville’s Mercado del Arenal is one of the city’s most noteworthy markets. It is located in a building on Pastor y Landero street, near La Maestranza bullring. It is one of the 14 markets built in the city between the 1940s and the late 1950s.
27 years after its construction, in 1974, the building was refurbished by Amalio Saldaña García. Before the market, the plot on Pastor y Landero was occupied by the former Convent of Pópulo, which was confiscated in 1835. Later, the site housed the Pópulo prison, which stopped operating in 1932, when the Ranilla prison was opened.
The building designed by Juan Talavera y Heredia, and later remodelled by Amalio Saldaña García, offers an Andalusian regionalist style in which the barrel vaults stand out.
What can you do at Seville’s Mercado del Arenal?
Beyond its historical legacy, this market is part of a major tourist hub in the city, right in the centre and very close to the bullring. Mercado del Arenal is also a gastronomic hub for lovers of good food.

Mercado del Arenal is open from Monday to Sunday, all week long, from 9:00 a.m. to midnight from Tuesday to Saturday, and from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Sundays and Mondays. One of the most interesting aspects of this venue is that it includes a very appealing stall selling vegan food products.

Where Seville’s Mercado del Arenal is located
The market is located right in the city centre, on Pastor y Landero street, in the neighbourhood of the same name, El Arenal. This is Seville’s bullfighting district par excellence. It is therefore another attraction in this neighbourhood, where you can also visit the Reales Atarazanas, Torre del Oro, La Maestranza Bullring and the Teatro de la Maestranza.
Mercado del Arenal is also the place that can attract tourists for the longest time, as all the monuments and cultural spaces mentioned above have much more limited visiting hours than the market.
This neighbourhood is bordered by Paseo Colón, next to the Guadalquivir River, and Adriano and Dos de Mayo streets. It forms part of Seville within the old city walls. The neighbourhood’s link with the port dates back to the 16th and 17th centuries, when Seville was the world capital of trade with the Indies.
