The best sunglasses for driving according to the DGT
Sunglasses should be another essential component for the driver. The Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) not only does not prohibit them, but actually recommends them. However, not all of them are suitable. There are certain features to keep in mind when choosing the right sunglasses for driving.
Behind the wheel, most of the information we receive comes through our sight and, according to the DGT, 80% of Spaniards have some kind of vision problem. That is why it is obvious that the main recommendation for wearing sunglasses while driving is that they should be prescription lenses if necessary.
THE BEST ONES: POLARISED AND WITH CATEGORY 3 SUN FILTER
Whether prescription or not, the DGT advises that your sunglasses for driving should be polarised, that is, lenses with a special layer that filters sunlight. This type of lens eliminates reflections and more effectively neutralises glare. In addition, they should have a category 3 sun filter to absorb between 81% and 91% of UV rays. And they should preferably be in soft colours: green, brown or grey.

These glasses are essential in certain conditions, such as when driving with the sun in front of you, although in these cases the DGT recommends avoiding driving. But that is not always possible, so it is best to keep our lenses handy and play it safe. The DGT also recommends wearing progressive glasses if you do not see well up close, so that you can clearly see the vehicle controls. And to avoid driving at night or in low-visibility conditions, when sunglasses should not be worn either.
SUNGLASSES FOR DRIVING YOU SHOULD NOT WEAR
On the other hand, the DGT also makes it clear which sunglasses for driving are not suitable. In this case, it includes those with a category 4 sun filter. These glasses are ideal for sports such as skiing, but they make visibility on the road more difficult. In addition, the DGT warns that glasses must be approved, so it is important to buy them from trusted places, such as opticians, and to ask the experts in these establishments if in doubt.
