Maestranza Theatre

You can already feel the chill in Seville, and one of the most popular plans during these months for locals and visitors is going to the Maestranza Theatre.

Its programme never disappoints those who enjoy the plays and concerts held there, and this autumn 2023 season is no exception. The Maestranza Theatre will host shows ranging from opera, to jazz and classical music, as well as dance performances that blend traditional and contemporary flamenco. They also haven’t forgotten the most nostalgic, with tribute shows to Tina Turner and Queen taking place this autumn. And there are also unique symphonies that transport us to the classics of Hollywood and Grease: The Musical.

It’ll be almost impossible for you to arrive late to its performances because just a ten-minute walk away you’ll find the Mercado del Arenal car park, where you can park and even reserve your space through our booking portal.

November with an N for Norma.

Maestranza’s November kicks off strong with one of Vincenzo Bellini’s most popular lyrical tragedies, Norma. It’s considered one of the most iconic and moving works, as it includes Casta Diva, one of the best-known 19th-century arias in the lyrical repertoire. This groundbreaking, transgressive piece, a pioneer of the bel canto tradition, revolves around the clash between the love felt by the priestess Norma for her beloved Pollione and the jealousy that torments her over Adalgisa. The production will be led by conductor Yves Abel, with staging by Nicola Berloffa, and features Yolanda Auyanet, Francesco Demuro, Raffaella Lupinacci and Rubén Amoretti. With its dramatic story, Norma won’t leave you indifferent, and will be performed on 12, 15, 17 and 18 November.

Jazz fans? Get your diary out.

On 13 November, Stacey Kent comes to the Maestranza Theatre, bringing saxes, flutes and piano, and will delight audiences with her warm, velvety voice. On this occasion, the international artist presents her latest album created with Art Hirahara, Songs From Other Places, which reflects on the concept of belonging and the influence of travel. The nostalgic tone, tuned to the joy that flows from the singer’s voice, will uplift and comfort listeners’ hearts.

Classicism and a top-level orchestra at the Maestranza.

The brilliant Mahler Chamber Orchestra will come to Seville on 26 November for a return to classicism under the baton of Italian conductor Daniele Gatti, principal conductor of the Zurich Opera, the Orchestre National de France and the Concertgebouw. The orchestra will begin with the lively, energetic Classical Symphony (1918), one of Sergei Prokofiev’s most popular works. Next comes Sinfonia Concertante Hob. I:105 (1792) by Joseph Haydn, which will colour the Maestranza with more playful, burlesque accents. And finally, the Symphony in C major (1940) by Igor Stravinsky, whose fast-paced, graceful rhythms will make for an electrifying finale.

December opens with dance.

On 1 and 2 December, the Spanish National Ballet (BNE) will light up the Maestranza stage with an original show inspired by fashion photographer Ruvén Afanador’s unique and distinctive vision of flamenco. Marcos Morau is the BNE’s choreographer and director of the La Veronal company. Captivated by the “direct and incisive” language of Afanador’s images, he feeds his creativity to craft a flamenco choreography that blends tradition and avant-garde. He sketches a beauty of light and shadow, aiming to reveal to the audience new ways and essences of living contemporary expression, movement and flamenco. So don’t miss this immersive experience, it won’t leave any spectator untouched.

Women artists who left their mark.

4 December will be packed with talent. On the one hand, the 3rd season of Rasgando el Silencio takes place on the occasion of Constitution Day and gives back a place to those women composers forgotten by music history through five concerts in very diverse formats. At the piano, Carmen Martínez-Pierret will revisit pieces by:

Soledad de Bengoechea
Josefa Fernanda de Borbón
Lluïsa Casagemas
María Luisa Chevallier
Eloísa D’Herbil
Eloísa de la Parra
María Isabel Prota

On the other hand, the essence of one of the greats, Tina Turner, will also shine at the Maestranza on 4 December through the powerful voice of Karin Bello. The tribute show Typically Tina will revisit many of her biggest hits, such as What’s Love Got to Do with It and We Don’t Need Another Hero, among many others.

Whether you’re a fan or not, it’s a great chance to relive the energy and dynamite spirit of this iconic artist at the Maestranza Theatre.

Relive the golden age of American swing at the Maestranza.

On 9 December, The Original Glenn Miller Orchestra will immerse us in the enormous artistic value and vibrant spirit of Glenn Miller’s swing, accompanied by the dazzling presence of The Irresistible Andrews Sisters and the spectacular Swing Time Jivers Ballet.

Retro nostalgia.

For those most passionate about the 70s, 80s and 90s, the Maestranza will also host shows that may well bring a tear to more than one eye.

On 9 December, you’ll have no doubt of it when you attend the Hollywood Symphony Orchestra concert. It will take audiences on an emotional journey through some of the most famous film scores — those created by John Williams or Hans Zimmer — such as:

Star Wars
Indiana Jones
Harry Potter
Gladiator
Inception
Sherlock Holmes
Pirates of the Caribbean
The Dark Knight Trilogy
The Lion King.

On 10 December, there will be a special Queen tribute by the band The Vipers. This group captures the unmistakable sound of the iconic band and recreates its anthems and ballads, always earning a roaring audience response.

Finally, on 13, 14, 15, 16 and 17 December, Grease, The Musical, one of cinema’s most beloved summer romances, will take over the Maestranza. It will bring back the film’s immersive spirit, with thrilling, vibrant acrobatic choreographies that will make you want to dance.
