Electric vehicle charging

Park pollution: electric vehicle charging points. APPARKYA car parks provide users with electric charging points in our car parks in Seville and Granada. A dedicated, branded space for charging your electric vehicle at the Mercado del Arenal, José Laguillo and Mercado de Triana car parks in Seville city centre, and at the Hermanos Maristas car park in Granada, under the slogan:

“Exclusive for parking pollution”

With this strategic approach, we want to keep providing society with mobility solutions, encourage the use of electric vehicles, and expand the availability of EV charging points in the cities where we operate — reinforcing our commitment to protecting the environment.

The environmental factor of electric vehicles.

For electric vehicles, the environmental factor is key: a low-emission car will reduce CO2 levels, which are responsible (among other things) for the greenhouse effect, as well as air pollutants that can cause serious health problems. But your wallet can also benefit if you decide to buy a low-emission vehicle. There are several options on the market:

Hybrid vehicle.

Electric-only driving at low speeds or as support during acceleration. The electric motor can work in series, parallel or in a mixed setup with the combustion engine. The battery recharges by recovering energy during braking.

Plug-in hybrid vehicle.

Possibility of fully electric driving with limited range (25–50 km). The electric motor can work in series, parallel or in a mixed setup with the combustion engine. The battery recharges by plugging the vehicle into the electric grid.

Range extender vehicle.

Fully electric driving; only the electric motor moves the vehicle. A combustion engine generates electricity to power the electric motor. The battery recharges by plugging the vehicle into the electric grid.

Pure electric vehicle.

Fully electric driving. There is only an electric motor and no internal combustion engine. The battery recharges by plugging the vehicle into the electric grid.

Some data on electric vehicle registrations in 2019.

Practically all European countries — and Spain is no exception — offer tax incentives for buyers of low-emission vehicles. Taxes such as registration tax or road tax are lower, so in the medium and long term it can pay off to buy a low-emission car. (Madrid is the Autonomous Community with the highest presence of electric vehicles. At the end of 2018 it maintained a support programme (MUS) that boosted registrations in the first quarter of 2019. Only the Basque Country, with its own plan, and MOVES have had support schemes in place. Castilla y León and Navarra have active tax deductions for the purchase of alternative vehicles).

All this without forgetting the fuel savings offered by some low-emission cars — as well as the ability to keep driving in certain cities with your own vehicle, even in restricted zones or during traffic restrictions due to pollution.

However, these advantages don’t seem to fully convince users. In the last year, carbon dioxide emissions have increased as more petrol cars have been sold.

Unlike the overall car market, which has been falling in Spain for the ninth consecutive month (-7.3%), sales of electric vehicles continue to grow in our country, and in fact last May they showed growth of 180% compared to the same period the previous year.

May 2019 data.

In total, 1,174 electric vehicles were registered in May (according to ANFAC, the Spanish Association of Automobile and Truck Manufacturers) — 900 of them passenger cars. That means 5,260 units had already been sold in 2019, i.e., 93.4% more than in the first five months of 2018. The best-selling model was the Nissan Leaf, with 208 units. After Nissan’s model, which accounts for 23.11% of the EV market share and is also the top seller for the 2019 cumulative total (906 units), come the Tesla Model 3 (122 units in May), the Renault Zoe (115), the smart fortwo (100) and the Hyundai Kona EV (85). ANFAC states that the electric vehicle is the type with the highest growth rate in May 2019.

These percentages may seem encouraging at first glance, but they represent only 1.06% of total passenger car sales in Spain in March. If we add plug-in hybrids, the share reaches 1.7% of total sales — so there is still a long way to go. Regarding where to charge your electric vehicle, Madrid has the highest number of charging points per 100 km of road, while Extremadura and Castilla-La Mancha show the lowest ratio.

The new branding of the electric charging points.

The installation of charging points for electric vehicles comes with branding that matches the concept — an exclusive space for parking pollution. The front is decorated with a skyline of the city, along with column graphics and painted floor markings, highlighting the importance of the dedicated space.
