The City Council chooses the most iconic bars in Seville

They say that in Seville there are more bars than hospital beds. The service sector plays a predominant role in the city, not only because of the growing number of tourists and visitors it receives, but also because of the healthy habit of frequenting these places that the inhabitants of this beautiful city are so used to. From Monday to Sunday, any time is a good time to have a great time within the walls of these establishments, many of which are centuries old.

And there are all kinds, for all tastes and colours. But the City Council has wanted to give special recognition to those considered to be iconic bars in Seville, as well as other businesses such as jewellery shops and clothing stores. To qualify, they must meet a series of requirements, such as being more than 40 years old or being relevant to traditional Sevillian culture in its material, economic and social aspects.

The most iconic bars in Seville

According to the mayor, Antonio Muñoz, the most iconic bars in Seville “are a hallmark for the people of Seville, since they reflect their culture and traditions, some of them centuries old. Therefore, they deserved this special treatment”. This treatment will involve a communication campaign and a guide including these businesses, as well as a budget allocation of 42,000 euros in the next municipal budgets for direct aid. Among the 21 selected establishments, these are the most iconic bars in Seville:

Patio San Eloy

The Gómez Pando family are the third generation behind this legendary Sevillian chain. Since 1972, they have been opening venues in Seville and currently have twelve in total, located between the city centre, Viapol and Triana. Famous for their affordable prices and their wide variety of montaditos, they serve more than 250,000 litres of beer every year. Their traditional decor is also one of their hallmarks.

Casa Manolo

It is a landmark in the La Macarena neighbourhood. A true classic that has been providing lifelong service since 1935. Between Parliament and the Arch, on Don Fadrique street, stands this traditional bar where you can enjoy tapas without needing elaborate dishes or signature cuisine, and at affordable prices. It is also the perfect place to have a coffee or hot chocolate accompanied by churros that can be bought from the calentitos stall just opposite.

Bar Europa

It occupies one of the most recognisable corners of the central La Alfalfa neighbourhood. Its regionalist style and the striking tilework on its façade catch the eye when passing by this venue on Siete Revueltas street. Its interior preserves this same essence, as does its menu, full of classics and specialities such as its ropa vieja. It ranks 200th out of more than 2,600 venues registered on TripAdvisor, and, among the comments, most highlight the good service and the good value for money.

Casa Vizcaíno

Casa Vizcaíno holds a privileged place among the iconic bars of Seville. It preserves the woodwork from when it was founded in 1935, and belongs to the typical old bars that still have sawdust on the floor. Right on Feria street, it is rare to pass by and find room to get through the narrow pavement where many customers gather, standing with a beer in hand, every day. By the way, they serve one of the best-poured beers in Seville, according to popular opinion.

Casa Morales

Its walls have lived through three different centuries and two millennia. And that is noticeable the moment you step inside. This venue on García de Vinuesa street has been open since 1850 and is included in the Special Protection Plan for Seville’s Historic Quarter. It began as a shop and wine store and today it is one of the most iconic bars in Seville. Its cheese and smoked fish boards, homemade stews and Galician-style octopus are among its specialities.

Taberna Entrecárceles

It is another of the city’s oldest hospitality establishments, open since 1894. Everything about it exudes history, both its decor and its location. In fact, the tavern occupies what used to be the Guard Room of the old Royal Prison of Seville, where Miguel de Cervantes was imprisoned and where legend says he wrote part of his work Don Quixote of La Mancha. It is right in the city centre, between Plaza del Salvador and Plaza de San Francisco.

El Cairo Restaurant

Another of Seville’s iconic bars: El Cairo, a place where you can enjoy tapas at the bar or at one of its elegant tables located on one of the busiest streets in the centre, Reyes Católicos. They offer quality service where their traditional Andalusian cuisine stands out, and they open every day of the year except Christmas Eve. They have been open since 1977 and their menu features the best selection of fish and seafood from the Andalusian coast, fried fish, grilled meats, oxtail, rice dishes, prawn salad and traditional stews.

La Campana Confectionery

Its shop window is one of the most photographed in Seville. Especially during Holy Week, when they display the traditional Lenten sweets alongside depictions of brotherhoods from this festival so popular in Seville. They have been master pastry chefs since 1885 and occupy a privileged spot in the city, in the square that bears their name. For many, it is the best confectionery in Seville, so it is no surprise that it has been chosen among the most iconic bars in Seville.
